Janet McGrath's work has gained her a loyal following of collectors from her beginnings in Boston and continuing as she accompanied her pastor-husband in church ministry in the New York Catskills, Chatanooga, TN and now in north central Florida near Ocala. Her portraits of General Robert E. Lee have gained national recognition and the appeal of her portraits of individuals and families can be found displayed throughout the United States. Janet works in both oil and pastel from live sittings and photographs. She also accepts long distance commissions, working with information provided by the client and/or traveling to their homes.
At the age of twelve Janet was selected to attend classes three days a week through High School at The Boston Museum of Fine Arts. A scholarship to the museum school as a painting major involved long hours of figure studies working from live models. Rembrandt, Velazquez, Rubens became a few of her many instructors as assignments were given to copy techniques from their original paintings. What a solid foundation and privileged beginning for a long carreer!
Mrs. McGrath earned her Bachelor's degree in the Visual Arts through New York's Empire State College, attended portrait workshops with John Howard Sanden, Daniel Greene, Burt Silverman, Albert Handell, and painted many commissioned portraits in the New York area. Moving south to the Georgia, Tennessee and Florida areas, Janet continues to establish herself as a sought after professional artist and painting instructor.
Janet agrees with the 19th century critic, Henry James, who wrote "There is no greater work of art than a great portrait." McGrath says "I see nothing more interesting and challengin to paint than the face. My love of art and people make portraiture a natural expression of these interests. I see my Sovereign Lord as my daily strength and source of all inspiration and ability."
